GOODE Bracket Challenge favorites survive Round 1 nearly intact

The first round of the GOODE Bracket Challenge is in the books and the tournament’s favorites survived nearly intact.

Only three lower seeds beat higher seeds, with the biggest upset being No. 19 seed Bryce Tolman’s (4@39) victory over No. 14 seed Lonnie Harris (2@39). Other “upsets” although fairly minor due to close seedings, were No. 17 Jason Staab’s (2@39) slim win over No. 16 April Coble (1@39) and No. 18 Eric Kelley’s (3.25@39) victory over Caroline Hensely (2@39).

The closest match up, and one that was nearly Round 1′s biggest upset, was the No. 7 Todd Kuykendall versus No. 26 Michael Arora pairing. Both tied with huge scores of 2@41, but Todd emerged in the tiebreaker (0.5@41 vs 4@39).

In the fan contest, of the 200 bracket submissions, five correctly guessed all three upsets in order to remain perfect and in the running for the $5,000 perfect bracket prize. To see the current fan bracket standings, click here.

With Round 2 underway during the month of July, expect some closer pairings, including some very intruiging match-ups between perennial Big Dawg challengers, such as the Todd Kuykendall/Jed Blackburn and Todd Johnson/Kyle Tate brackets.

The Round 2 (July) match-ups are:

1. Jeremy Newby-Ricci vs. 17. Jason Staab

2. Jay Leach vs. 18. Eric Kelley

3. David Miller vs. 19. Bryce Tolman

4. Regina Jaquess vs. 13. Jeff Kepchia
