Q&A with March 2012 WATERSKI cover boy Nick Parsons

With Team GOODE’s Nick Parsons ripping it up on this month’s cover of WaterSki Magazine — see a sneak peak of the issue here — and the season-starting Moomba Masters a little over a month away, we thought it would be a good time to check in on the world’s No. 5 ranked skier.

First, congrats on being on the cover of WATERSKI for the second time in your career.  How does it feel?

Nick Parsons:  It feels pretty good. You don’t get too many covers in your life.

What have you been up to this off season?

NP:  I’ve been busy with a couple of my hobbies here in Utah.  I’ve been doing a lot of skate skiing and I ski in an amateur alpine racing league a couple nights a week in Park City.  My father owns a small retail bakery so I’ve been helping him with that too.

When was last time you were on the water?

NP:  I went down to Florida for Thanksgiving and stayed and skied couple weeks after that, so it’s been more than a month.

How will you get ready for the upcoming season?

NP:  I’ve got Moomba coming up so I’ll be going down to Phoenix and maybe Southern California.  Then I’ll head up to Sacramento for some training with Marcus Brown.  It’s good to ski against someone. Then we’ll be off to Australia.

With three straight years in the top 5 on the IWWF elite rankings list you’ve established yourself as among the very best skiers in the world.  What are you working on that will hopefully help you nail that top spot?

NP:  Staying in the top five is tough but getting that extra one or two percent to get into the No. 1 or 2 spots is really tough.  To me the difference is the mental aspect of having confidence in your equipment.  When you have the right equipment that works for your style, you get confidence from that.  I look to the snow skiing world cup too.  The top guys aren’t 20 to 25, they’re 30 to 35.  They’ve got that experience to know what works best for them.

Is there any one tournament that you’re really focused on this year?

NP:  I took second at the Masters in 2010, but other than that I’ve struggled at that tournament and I’ve never gone into it with a lot of confidence.  I think I’m learning how to do that now and I really want to do well there.  It’s a really cool experience to ski there and it would be an even cooler experience to win it.

Any goals for 2012?

NP:  My personal best has been 3 buoys at 41-feet off for at least five years, so this year I’d like to make it over to that four ball.

Thanks Nick.

NP:  Sure thing.

The United States’ Adam Pickos and the Czech Republic’s Adam Sedlmajer rode their GOODE skis to silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the 2012 FISU World University Water Ski Championships January 15th in Santiago, Chile.

Pickos tied eventual champion Felipe Miranda, who was skiing on his home site, with 3 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off in the finals, but lost to the Chilean in a runoff to finish second.  Sedlmajer was a close third with 2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off.  Five of the 12 finalists in Men’s slalom skied on GOODEs.

For Team GOODE skier Sedlmajer, the tournament was the first competition in what could be a big year on the world stage.  Currently ranked No. 7 on the IWWF Men’s slalom elite rankings list, he is slated to compete in all three events at the Moomba Masters in March, and for the first time ever compete in Men’s slalom at the U.S. Masters in May.

“I was very excited to ski in this tournament because it gave me a head start going into the 2012 season,” said Sedlmajer, the defending world overall champion.  “I’m really motivated to start skiing again and the extra practice is going to be helpful in the year’s early events.”

Dave and Dawn race to podiums at USSA Masters event

Congratulations to GOODE’s own Dave and Dawn Goode who finished second and first, respectively, in their age divisions at the last weekend’s U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association masters division race in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Dave and Dawn raced on prototypes from GOODE’s soon-to-be released, all-new line of Carbon Fiber Race Skis.

Fans select Jaquess world record as GOODE Skis moment of the year

After a week of online voting by fans, Regina Jaquess’ new Women’s slalom world record of 2 buoys at 41 feet off has been selected as the GOODE Skis moment of the year.

“There were so many great moments in 2011 that I’m glad I didn’t have to decide between them,” said Dave Goode, founder and president of GOODE Skis. “World records are pretty special and obviously voters felt the same way. Regina had one of the best years competitive water skiing has ever seen and I can’t think of anyone more deserving.”

Thomas Degasperi’s second career world slalom title finished second in the voting with Karen Truelove’s slalom victory at the Moomba Masters coming in third. Chad Scott and Dave Miller finishing first and second at the Diablo Shores Pro-Am was named the fourth-ranked moment, while Kyle Tate’s Big Dawg Finals victory – along with a sweet 16 comprised of eight GOODE skiers – was fifth.

“When you look back at the year it is a pretty impressive list of performances and victories,” said Dave. “We’re honored to have played our part in these great athletes’ accomplishments by arming them with the very best skis and boots in the sport.”

While the top 5 were determined by fans, moments ranked Nos. 10 through 5 were determined prior to the voting. They were:

10. Chris Parrish does a triple-opt up
9. GOODE moves all snow ski production to the U.S.
8. GOODE skis sweep Collegiate Nationals
7. New snow ski line introduced; wins major industry awards
6. The GOODE NANO-“twist” is released, introducing the industry’s first ever dual rockers and nano carbon fiber and resins

Thanks to everyone who participated in the voting and best wishes for an even more accomplishments in 2012.
